Generate SQL DDL

An Implemented Database Model "data" that is stored in a Schema, Tables, Columns, and Keys can be used to generate a SQL DDL export file. This file can then be imported into an SQL-engine based DBMS or possibly to a database diagrammer. The one employed by Whitemarsh is Dezign by DataNamic.com. It is inexpensive and very capable. There are two buttons at the right side of the screen, View Generation Result and Data Model Diagrammer. Properly linked by embedding a Windows Short Cut, the diagrammer will begin to execute. It can then read the Generated SQL DDL file and a diagram can be shown.  The process to accomplish the generation of the SQL DDL includes:

  • Start the Implemented Database Model Metabase System Module
  • Select the DBMS
  • Enter User Name and Password
  • Select the Menu Item, Schema and Tables, then the subordinate item, SQL DDL, and finally the Generate process
    • Highlight the appropriate Schema
    • If an Implemented Database Data Model tree hierarchy is to be dynamically created, select the Table around which the data model hierarchy is to be created.
      • Press the Display Implemented Database Model Diagram
    • If a SQL DDL output file is to be created,
      • Select the output file
      • Clear the output file
      • Select how Super & Subtype entities are to be processed
      • Press either the Generate Schema based data model button, or the Generate root-table based data model
  • Press either the View Generation Result or
  • Press the Data Model Diagrammer button
