Assign DBMS Column Value Domains

A DBMS Column, once initially created does not have an assigned value domain. This essentially means that any value would be considered acceptable. To restrict the value set, a Value Domain needs to be assigned. The process to assign DBMS Column Value Domains includes:

  • Start the Operational Database Model Metabase System Module
  • Select the DBMS
  • Enter User Name and Password
  • Select the Menu Item, DBMS Columns, then the subordinate menu item Maintenance, and the subordinate menu item, DBMS Column Value Domain
  • Select a DBMS Schema
  • Select a DBMS Table
  • Within the DBMS Column Value Domain hierarchy, select the DBMS Column to which a value domain should be assigned. The currently assigned value domain will be shown at the end of the entry-line. It will most likely be "Unknown."
  • Select the Value Domain Type, Containment
  • Shown will then be all the value domains that can be assigned based on the DBMS Column's parent Attribute, and parent Data Element.
  • Select one one of the allowed value domains. If the selected value domain is already assigned to the DBMS Column's parent Column, the "Assign" button will be greyed-out.
  • If assignable, Press the Assign button
