First, the Whitemarsh metabase system is now free. Requests for downloads of the free Single-User and Single-Metabase version can be submitted to Whitemarsh from the website. The link is on the front page. We have received requests from all around the world. Ask for yours today.
The June 2008 version of the Metabase System, V6.9.8.5, has been posted. If you have already requested a Metabase System copy, you have been sent an email from the Whitemarsh Forum. The ReadMe file for this new version is posted to the Metabase page. This V6.9.8.5 version contains several needed adjustments and fixes that were uncovered during work on the Data Semantics Management book.
Second, a new Short Paper, Function Points: A Strategy to Determine the Size and Cost of Database-centric Business Information Systems, has been posted to the website. This is a logical successor to the Manufacturing Project Plans short paper which presented a strategy for both engineering project plans and also how to “manufacture” them.
The Function Points short paper describes the value that can be derived from Function Points, and presents a strategy to calculate two key metrics that can be employed to create rough order of magnitude estimates for Business Information System projects.
The paper finally contains an example showing how Clarion (www.softvelocity.com), as a development environment, along with the Whitemarsh Business Information System development methodology dramatically affects both the count and the cost of Function Points. Together these can reduce the cost of building Business Information System by as much as 90%.
There is a sequence to the Short Papers. The master plan was set out in 2006, and we are proceeding according to that plan. The last Short Paper was Information Systems Plans. This one is on how to construct the plans. The next one will be on the use of Function Point. The one after that is on generating Metrics. There are 21 Short Papers in all. We’re doing them one at a time.
Third, the new Whitemarsh book, Data Semantics Management is complete. That means that there is now a end-to-end manuscript. During this next month, the book will proceed into final construction. The Table of Contents and Chapter 1 of Volume 1 is on the Website. There is also a link to the Table of Contents for Volume 2. This book will go on sale with the August Newsletter. You will be able to buy the book as separate volumes or through a special combined price.
