Add Primary and Foreign Keys

A specification of relationship between a "parent" Entity and a "child" Entity is accomplished through a Primary Key and a Foreign Key.  Each relationship specification is named and described. The description should specify the business intent of the relationship. An important component of each relationship is Referential Integrity and the corresponding Referential Actions. The process to accomplish adding primary and foreign keys include:

  • Start the Specified Data Model Metabase System Module
  • Select the DBMS
  • Enter User Name and Password
  • Select the Menu Item, Keys, then subordinate menu item, Entity Primary Keys
    • Select a Subject
    • Select an Entity
    • Press Insert
    • Create Primary Key Name and Description
  • Select the subordinate menu item, Entity Primary Key Attributes
    • Select Subject
    • Select Entity
    • Select and tag the Primary Key
    • Tag the Attributes that belong to the Primary Key
    • Press the Build button
  • Select the subordinate menu item, Entity Foreign Keys
    • Select Subject
    • Highlight the "Child" Entity
    • Press Insert
    • Select the "Parent" Entity Primary Key
    • Enter a short action phrase for the Foreign Key
    • Choose the Match Option
    • Choose the Referential Action Update and Delete Rule
    • Describe the purpose for the Foreign Key
    • Press the button that creates the Foreign Key
